摘要

The Bush administration's 2009 budget request may include funds to purchase four additional Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor stealth fighters: a decision that opens the door for extending the production line but still leaves the US Air Force (USAF) far short of its requirement for 381 aircraft.rnRepublican Representative Phil-lipGingrey told Jane's on 22 January that the Department of Defense (DoD) is planning to request funding for just four more fighters in addition to the 183 already on order. Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England also told Gin-grey in a 14 January letter that the Pentagon does not plan to support another major multi-year procurement of the F-22.rnAlthough England dismissed the possibility of another multi-year contract, his proposal to add four more fighters to the production line effectively extends F-22 manufacture at least slightly past its 2011 closure date. That gives Gingrey and other F-22 advocates enough time to step in and insist on anotherrnmajor procurement deal and that is an opportunity that Gingrey said he intends to take.
