A next-generation infrared (IR) threat warning system, known as Elix-IR and being developed tor UK forces in Afghanistan, is expected to be delivered into theatre in July 2009, according to the developer, Thales. The medium-range wavelength (3-5 μm) Elix-IR sensor system is being designed to warn the crew on any military vehicle - but particularly fast jet and rotary-wing aircraft and armoured fighting vehicles - of an attack by a rocket-propelled grenade, missile or gunfire, while also providing distance and direction information.
