In an unusual move, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has announced a three-month extension to the tenure of General Hermogenes Esperon, the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). Gen Esperon - who was due to be replaced by army chief General Alexander Yano in February 2008 - is remaining in his position in order to sustain the progress being made against the country's long-running insurgencies.
