Two of the four remaining contenders to supply up to 36 protected 155 mm 52-cal self-propelled howitzers (SPHs) to the Australian Defence Force (ADF) have withdrawn from the competition. Rheinmetall executive Klaus Reimann told Jane's the company had advised the Australian Department of Defence it had decided not to proceed as prime contractor in offering an upgraded version of the wheeled Denel Land Systems G6 for the SPH element of Land 17: the programme to replace the ADF's 155 mm artillery.
