Russia's defence industry has enjoyed a resurgence since the turn of the century. Exports more than doubled between 2000 and 2007 to about USD6.5 billion, while the Russian defence budget leapt from USD7.36 billion in 2001 to USD36.73 billion in 2008. At the end of 2007, First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov was able to announce a 73.9 per cent increase in conventional armaments production, compared to the previous year, and a 39.1 per cent rise in military aircraft manufacturing.
