The US Coast Guard (USCG) is to put some of its ships and aircraft through their paces in the Arctic in mid-2008 in an attempt to determine their suitability for cold-weather operations. It is part of an effort to ramp up the service's presence in the far north as the polar ice cap melts, exposing hundreds of thousands of square miles of previously inaccessible waters to commercial and military traffic.
