The US Air Force (USAF) has marked a major milestone in Its synthetic fuel programme, conducting the first supersonic flight test of an aircraft powered by synthetic fuel on 18 March. A Boeing B-1B Lancer strategic bomber at Dyess Air Force Base (AFB) in Texas became the first aircraft to break the sound barrier flying on a mixture of 50 per cent conventional JP-8 fuel and 50 per cent synthetic fuel made from liquefied coal.
