BAE Systems plans a live airborne firing of the new Thales Air Defence Systems Lightweight Multirole Missile (LMM) from a Herti unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) variant "soon", according to the UK company. Details of the tests of the LMM, which is based on the Starstreak/ Starburst surface-to-air missile (SAM), were revealed at the Association for Unmanned Vehicles Systems International 2008 (AUVSI) conference in San Diego on 11 June. Tests already conducted include a first-stage captive flight in March 2007; a full missile firing from an aircraft on a cliff in Wales five months later; and a captive flight. Martin Rowe-Willcocks, BAE Systems' head of business development (export programmes) - utility unmanned autonomy systems, said the test firing in flight by aircraft DV007 was imminent.
