The number of UK service personnel killed in Afghanistan stood at 102 as of 12 June. The figure reached 100 on 8 June when three soldiers from the 2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment were killed by a lone suicide bomber while on foot patrol in Helmand province. Two more soldiers from the same unit were killed by enemy fire while on patrol in the Upper Gereshk Valley on 12 June, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed. Most British fatalities have taken place since the redeployment of British forces to Helmand in 2006; only five troops died between April 2002 and early March 2006. Seventy-six of the 102 fatalities were as a result of hostile action, according to MoD figures, with 26 known to have died either as a result of illness, non-combat injuries or accidents or for yet-to-be-determined reasons.
