The consolidation of the UK's naval shipbuilding sector will go ahead following the announcement on 11 June that VT Group and BAE Systems have signed a binding agreement to combine their surface ship and naval support interests in a joint venture (JV) company. The creation of BVT Surface Fleet Limited - the GBP1 billion (USD 1.9 billion) per annum venture that will cover around 85 per cent of the UK's naval construction base - remains subject only to the approval of VT Group shareholders, whose agreement will be sought at an extraordinary general meeting on 30 June. Regulators within both the EU and the US Department of State have already agreed to the venture. The announcement that VT and BAE Systems' agreement has become legally binding comes after the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on 20 May that it had approved the manufac-ture of two aircraft carriers (CVF) for the Royal Navy; a commitment to the GBP3.9 billion CVF programme was a prerequisite of the formation of BVT.
