Sudanese President Omar el-Bashir formally agreed a peace deal on 9 June concerning the oil-rich town of Abyei - a flashpoint for renewed conflict that threatened a shaky peace deal between north and south Sudan. National news service SUNA reported that the decree paving the way for the return of tens of thousands of refugees falls within the wider agreement reached in 2005 to end a decades-old civil war between the north and south of the central African country. Under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), southern Sudan was accorded semi-autonomous status and represented in a unity government. Competing claims over Abyei and its oil wealth prompted suspension of southern participation in the government for several months and the ensuing clashes in May razed the town to the ground, sending an estimated 90,000 people fleeing from their homes.
