Israel's Rafael has initiated low-rate initial production (LRIP) of its Trophy armoured vehicle active protection system (APS), the company has confirmed. A Rafael spokesman told Jane's at Eurosatory on 18 June that the Trophy production line was "under establishment". Destined for the Israel Defence Force's (IDF's) Merkava Mk 4 main battle tanks (MBTs), the first systems are expected to achieve an initial operating capability in the third quarter of 2009. The IDF has determined, however, that all of its newly acquired MBTs and armoured personnel carriers will be equipped with the Trophy system. Now redesignated 'ASPRO-A', Trophy is a 360 degree hard-kill APS developed to IDF requirements to defend armoured vehicles against attack from anti-tank guided missiles, rocket-propelled grenades and high-explosive anti-tank rounds.
