The Clavero (CF-16), the first ol two river patrol boats being built for the Peruvian Navy by shipbuilder Sima, was launched in Iquitos on 10 June. Clavero-class patrol boats were domestically designed to fulfil the navy's requirements for surveillance and reconnaissance of the Amazon basin. The ship will join the Peruvian fleet on the Amazon River by October. The service needed a ship with minimal draft (between 0.61 m and 0.97 m, depending on the load) to allow operations on the Putumayo River during the dry season - a task that cannot be undertaken by the navy's four gunboats. The Putumayo marks the Colombia-Peru border, which is an area of concern with regard to drug trafficking and terrorist activities.
