A US Department of Defense (DoD) report released in June has shown that Helmand experienced a much higher frequency of violent incidents than Afghanistan's other provinces in 2007 and early 2008. The 'Report on Progress toward Security and Stability in Afghanistan' recorded some 2,400 'kinetic events' in Helmand from 1 January 2007 to 8 March 2008 - around six per day on average. In contrast, the second most violent province, Kunar, witnessed just 900 events during the same period. The report came as UK forces, which operate in Helmand as part of Regional Command South, suf- fered 13 fatalities in June amid an escalation in violence especially in the east and south of the country. There were 46 coalition fatalities in all, making June the bloodiest month for United States and NATO forces since the overthrow of the Taliban in 2001. A spokesman for the UK Ministry of Defence based in-country told Jane's that "Helmand has a complexity all of its own in Afghanistan ... that will obvi- ously result in a greater number of kinetic events".
