摘要

The number of Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) F/A-18A/B Hornet fighters set to undergo centre barrel replacement (CBR) may be cut by more than half, Jane's has learnt. The centre barrel is the main load-bearing part of the fuselage to which the wings and main undercarriage are attached and it can be prone to cracking in older aircraft. CBR funding has been allocated for up to 49 of the RAAF's fleet of 71 F/A-18A/Bs under Phase 3.2 of the Hornet Upgrade Program (HUG). However, Air Commodore Roy McPhail, Director General Aerospace Combat Systems, told Jane's on 9 July that a new study by the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) had demonstrated that not all centre barrels needed to be replaced. While the final number of aircraft to undergo CBR will be determined in the next month or so, "it will be a significant reduction from the 49 and there'll be a significant reduction in costs", Cdre McPhail said.
