The US Department of Defense (DoD) is postponing the award of contracts for the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV): the next-generation Humvee replacement. The DoD was expected in late June or early July to select as many as three JLTV prototypes in the first stage of the JLTV design contest. Bidders submitted proposals for the first round of the JLTV contest in April, and the US Army and US Marine Corps (USMC) have been jointly reviewing these to decide which companies will proceed to the next round. David Branham, congressional and public affairs liaison for the USMC land systems office, told Jane's that the JLTV contract award was being delayed but was unable to provide an update on when a selection would be announced. "The source selection process still continues with dialogue between the [bidders] and the government," he said in an e-mail. "Although July was the timeframe previously mentioned for a contract award, no new date for an announcement has materialised since the award was delayed." Industry sources told Jane's they expect the award may be delayed until September or October. Much is at stake for the US defence industry, which expects orders for as many as 40,000 JLTVs when a production design is selected.
