India's Ministry of Defence (MoD) has dispatched a request for proposals (RIP) to six overseas manufacturers for the outright purchase of 197 light observation helicopters (LOHs) in a deal valued at around USD750 million. The RfP was issued on 24 July to Bell, MD Helicopters and Sikorsky of the US, Eurocopter, AgustaWestland of Italy and Russia's Kamov. The acquisition includes 133 aircraft for the Army Aviation Corps (AAC) and 64 for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and should be concluded by 2010. The deal includes an offset requirement of 50 per cent of the contract value as well as the transfer of maintenance-related technology to state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), MoD officials said.
