The general nominated to lead the US Air Force (USAF) said he will "reinvigorate" the service's nuclear force and speed up the fielding of more intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) assets. In a 22 July statement prepared for the Senate Armed Services Committee, General Norton Schwartz, currently head of US Transportation Command, said he would take steps to "reinvigorate our nuclear enterprise" after two recent high-profile incidents that raised serious concerns about USAF oversight of the mission. Those two incidents -the mistaken shipment of intercontinental ballistic missile parts to Taiwan and the accidental flight of a nuclear-armed bomber inside United States airspace - helped force the resigna-tion of Secretary of the Air Force Michael Wynne and the retirement of Chief of Staff Michael Moseley.
