Russian President Dmitry Medvedev approved a new version of the country's foreign policy doctrine on 12 July. Called the 'Foreign Policy Concept of the Russian Federation', the doctrine is to be in force for the next eight to 10 years. An updated text of Russian military doctrine - another key national directive - may appear later this year or inearly 2009. Although the structure of the new concept is notdissimilar from previous documents approved by President Vladimir Putin in June 2000 (both have five chapters), the updated policy document is twice the size and has a number of new provisions, assessing general trends on a global scale and fixing a much broader Russian stance on arms control issues and relations with the US and NATO.
