The Israeli government is seeking to acquire up to lour multimission surface combatants based on Lockheed Martin's Littoral Combat Ship design (LCS-1) for the US Navy (USN). The US Defense Security Co-operation Agency notified Congress on 15 July of Israel's request to procure the frigate-sized LCS-I vessels in a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) deal potentially worth USD1.9 billion. Lockheed Martin is working with the Israeli Navy to develop a ship with mission systems permanently installed, in contrast to the USN's LCS concept of swappable mission packages tailored for specific deployments.
