摘要

The training and development of the Iraqi security forces should be the top priority tor UK forces in southern Iraq, the UK Defence Committee said in a report released on 22 July, which hailed security gains in the area that had been provisionally under British control since the 2003 Invasion. "The training and development of the Iraqi security forces is now the most important task facing UK forces in southern Iraq," said the report, entitled 'Operations in Iraq and the Gulf'. "The larger the military training commitment we can maintain, the greater will be the UK influence in Iraq, and in the region as a whole, as Iraq recovers its position as a wealthy and powerful Middle East nation." About 4,000 UK troops remain in Iraq on the fringe of the oil-rich southern city of Basra, but they no longer have an active combat role. UK troops transferred control of Basra to Iraqi forces in December 2007.
