Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf has agreed to step down as head of state, according to Pakistani government officials and Western diplomats, in a move promising to end months of uncertainty surrounding his rule. On 15 August, officials from Musharraf's office denied reports that he would imminently step down to avoid impeachment. However, a minister in the coalition government - which defeated Musharraf's allies in elections in February - told Jane's that "we are now very near to the end of president Musharraf's rule - it's just maybe a few days more".
