The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is set to inject new momentum into its plans to acquire a new maritime communications electronic support measures (CESM) capability under Project Shaman. Intended as a successor to the current COBLU (Cooperative OUTBOARD Logistics Update) system fitted to the UK Royal Navy's (RN's) Type 22 Batch 3 frigates, Shaman was conceived as a CESM fit for the new Type 45 destroyers and for retrofit to four Type 23 frigates. CESM systems are eavesdropping devices used to detect, analyse, sort and track communication signals. BAE Systems Integrated System Technologies (Insyte), teamed with the Information Dominance Systems sector of BAE Systems Information and Electronic Warfare Systems (IEWS) was named preferred bidder in early 2005 following a competition against a rival team of DML, ArgonST and Lockheed Martin.
