The US government has spent roughly USD85 billion on contractor services in the Iraq theatre, according to a study released on 12 August by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). United States forces have been heavily dependent on contractors for everything from logistics support and equipment maintenance to linguist services and armed security. According to CBO estimates, around 190,000 contractor personnel support US operations in Iraq, a figure that eclipses the total number of uniformed military currently in theatre. The report highlights the extent to which US military operations rely on contractor support. "The United States has used contractors during previous military operations, although not to the current extent," the report states. "According to rough historical data, the ratio of about one contractor employee for every member of the US armed forces in the Iraq theatre is at least 2.5 times higher than that ratio during another major US conflict."
