Guinea-Bissau was facing a crisis after an alleged coup plot by the head of the West African country's navy was foiled and President Joao Bernardo Vieira ordered parliament dissolved after the major political party quit the ruling coalition. Admiral Jose Americo Bubo Na Tchuto was apprehended on 14 August in The Gambia after escaping house arrest for his purported coup attempt a week earlier. Adm Tchuto has vehemently denied participating in the coup plot, which was reportedly foiled by Armed Forces Chief of Staff General Batista Tagme Na Wai on his return from a meeting of senior West African military officials in Nigeria. Vieira, who returned to power in 2005 after being deposed after 19 years of rule in a civil war six years earlier, swore in a new government on 9 August.
