In marked contrast to recent operations in Iraq, US marines have relied heavily on their field artillery during fighting in southern Afghanistan, according to members of the task force. Major Ron McLaughlin, fire support officer for the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), told Jane's the marines had carried out more than 100 artillery missions during recent operations in southern Helmand province. He said the mud-brick compounds often used by Taliban fighters as fighting positions were of "quite a bit heavier construction than most Westerners are used to", he said. "They were buildings in some cases with four-to five-foot thick walls." Maj McLaughlin said that the 24 MEU made extensive use of its BAE Systems M777A2 lightweight 155 mm howitzers during the kinetic phase of operations in May and early June 2008 when Taliban fighters had taken up positions inside a network of mud-brick compounds in and around Garmsir district. Maj McLaughlin said artillery teams often fired rounds to penetrate and break up the fortified structures.
