摘要

The Afghan National Army (ANA) is receiving its first NATO-standard small arms as part of a modernisation effort, but the new weapons are getting a mixed reception. When Jane's spoke with soldiers of the 4th Kandak [battalion], 3rd Brigade at a combat outpost in southern Helmand Province, the ANA soldiers said they had recently been issued the NATO-standard 5.56 mm M16 rifle and undergone marksmanship training under the supervision of UK advisers. They said they liked the M16 for its accuracy but preferred the Kalashnikov-series (AK) rifle for its durability and reliability. Sergeant Mohammad Nazir said: "The M16 is good, it can shoot well; but the AK is better than the M16 because we are used to it. We have another problem: our M16s don't have any sights [night optics].
