The US Department of Defense (DoD) has terminated a protracted and politically charged industry competition for a USD35 billion contract to build a new fleet of aerial refuelling tankers for the US Air Force (USAF). The Pentagon previously planned to award the KC-X contract by the end of 2008. However, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said on 10 September that he has decided to end the contest because it is unrealistic to award the contract before US President George W Bush's term of office ends in January 2009. "Over the past seven years the process has become enormously complex and emotional: in no small part because of mistakes and mis-steps along the way by the Department of Defense," Gates said. "It is my judgement that, in the time remaining to us, we can no longer complete a competition that would be viewed as fair and objective in this highly charged environment," he said.
