Indian and Israeli special forces are to conduct joint counter-terrorism exercises as part of the development of strategic, military and intelligence-sharing ties between the two countries. Official sources said the proposed manoeuvres were discussed during a low-key visit to New Delhi from 7-10 September by Major General Avi Mizrahi, the Israeli army chief. The details of the exercises, which are likely to be held in India, featured in talks between Gen Mizrahi, his Indian counterpart, General Deepak Kapoor, and the Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee, Admiral Sureesh Mehta. They are expected to simulate urban warfare, hostage rescue, deep penetration assaults and close-quarter combat in mountainous terrain such as India's disputed Jammu and Kashmir region, where the army has been battling Muslim separatists since 1989.
