The versatile software required by organisations to house intellectual property and trade secrets also contains security weaknesses that are exploitable by data predators. Richard Kirk recommends possible solutions. Open-source software (OSS) has come a long way in a relatively short space of time but, although the software genre fosters code re-use - which can save significant amounts of time and money - it still needs to be specified, tested and deployed just like other applications software.
