US Air Forces (USAF) Southern (12th Air Force), the air component of US Southern Command, is preparing to conduct a new mission in late October aimed at building stronger relationships with the air forces of Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. Under Operation 'Southern Partner', more than 70 USAF personnel will depart for South America on 26 October for about two weeks to exchange information with regional air forces on topics ranging from aircraft maintenance to search-and-rescue procedures. The USD500,000 operation is not a military training project and is not funded with training dollars. Rather, it is a programme to foster mutual learning between regional air forces. The operation is part of a larger USAF effort headed by General Norman Seip, the head of US Air Forces Southern (12th Air Force). Gen Seip said he plans to conduct two exchange missions and two regional air chief conferences every fiscal year.
