The Belgian Army has received, on schedule, the last of 400 Iveco Defence Vehicles (DV) Astra M250.45WM 8 tonne 6×6 tactical trucks. These were ordered late in 2003 to replace older MAN vehicles, with first deliveries taking place in 2005. The vehicle has already been deployed overseas by the Belgian Army to Southern Lebanon as part of the UN force. An option on an additional 379 vehicles will not now be exercised. All 400 vehicles have forward-control cabs fitted for, but not with, an applique armour package able to be rapidly installed using standard tools. The cabs have built-in floor mine protection as standard. A total of 350 removable protection kits (RPKs) have also been supplied through Iveco by German company IBD Deisenroth, giving protection from small arms fire and shell splinters. Under a separate contract, a batch of NBC (nuclear, biological and chemical) protection kits will be provided and fitted to vehicles as required.
