NP Aerospace is to convert a fleet of 157 4x4 Cougar vehicles to the enhanced Ridgback medium protected patrol vehicle (MPPV) standard for the British Army. In late 2007 the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) selected the Force Protection Cougar for an emergent protected patrol vehicle requirement and these are now being procured through the US Marine Corps. NPAerospace's Coventry facility is already working on the initial batch of vehicles, which were flown in from the US under the GBP81 million (USD129 million) contract awarded by the MoD's Defence Equipment & Support organisation. Modifications required to make a Ridgback are extensive, including additional passive armour; bar armour; a remote weapon station; enhanced situational awareness systems; new seats for improved crew survivability; General Dynamics' Bowman communications gear; and electronic jamming devices to counter improvised explosive devices.
