摘要

A programme of studies worth AUD4.67 million (USD2.85 million) to identify Australia's future submarine requirement was initiated by Australian Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon on 27 October. The future submarine project, known as Sea 1000, will be managed by a project office of about 17 people and is expected to expand in the coming years as the project gathers pace. The Australian Ministry of Defence (MoD) said that the project office would operate "under the joint supervision of the chief, Capability Development Group, and the chief executive officer for the Defence Materiel Organisation". Speaking at a visit to the Royal Australian Navy's (RAN's) Fleet Base West at HMAS Stirling in Western Australia, the minister said: "Through these studies, [the MoD] will engage industry to assist development of the project acquisition strategy for government consideration in the second half of 2009. "Work on the concept design of the future submarine will commence in 2010, leading to further consideration by government in 2011," he added.
