Privatisation of the world's third-largest shipbuilder, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), moved a step closer after it emerged that the Korea Development Bank (KDB) has selected the South Korean Hanwha Group as preferred bidder. A spokesman for Daewoo confirmed to Jane's on 29 October that if Hanwha Group secures the acquisition, it will take a 50.4 per cent stake in DSME, beating rival Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and preventing the formation of a monopoly in the construction of naval vessels for the Republic of Korean Navy (RoKN). The announcement followed the collapse of a third bid from the Pohang Iron and Steel Company (POSCO), after POSCOs partner GS Group withdrew on 13 October. According to a report from South Korean news agency Yonhap, KDB plans to sign a final deal with Hanwha to sell the Daewoo shipyard within 2008.
