UK Raytheon Sentinel R.1 Airborne Stand-Off Radar (ASTOR) aircraft and ground stations were deployed to Afghanistan during November to support UK and NATO operations against the Taliban. Jane's understands two aircraft and two ground stations participated in the deployment, which is a major milestone in the GBP1.1 billion (USD1.7 billion) ASTOR programme. The first operational ASTOR missions were timed to coincide with the system being declared in-service by the Royal Air Force (RAF) and British Army and have given UK commanders access to UK-owned near-realtime moving target indicator and synthetic aperture radar imagery of the Afghan theatre of operations for the first time. The ASTOR assets then moved on to Oman,where they flew further missions.
