Vector Aerospace hopes its work on the UK's Boeing Chinook HC.2/2A transport helicopter could help it win the first phase of an ambitious project to bring the UK Royal Air Force's (RAF's) fleet of heavy lift helicopters up to a common configuration. Under Project Julius the RAF plans to re-vamp all its fleet of 48 Chinooks with Honeywell T55-714 engines, glass cockpits, Bowman radios, Successor identification friend or foe (IFF) equipment and new defensive aid systems. The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has launched a competition for the first tranche of eight helicopters under a contract that could be worth more than GBP100 million (USD154 million).
