Tactical commanders in the field have always been faced with something of a dilemma in deciding where they should position themselves while operations are in progress. On the one hand, remaining in their headquarters gives them access to a wide range of information, good communications and staff support, on the other, they have no real 'feel' for how the battle is going and how their troops are feeling.
