In the wake of a Shootout involving security firm Blackwater USA, the US Department of Defense (DoD) is pushing to consolidate oversight of private security companies (PSCs) in Iraq.rnThe 16 September incident, which left a number of civilians dead, has spurred a top-down review of the use of PSCs. Following the incident, US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates dispatched a group to Iraq to review the conduct of security contractors working for the DoD. Gates said the department would take steps to "enhance the command and control" of PSCs and better co-ordinate their activities with military commanders.
