The Israel Defence Force's (lDF's) Chief of Staff (CoS), Lieutenant General Gabi Ashkenazi, has completed a reshuffle of his General Staff. Following the resignation of eight generals after the 2006 War in Lebanon, Gen Ashkenazi has, however, been forced to promote officers who bear responsibility for the failures of the recent conflict. The only officer unaffected by the war - Major General Dan Harel, who until recently served as Israel's military attache in Washington - has been appointed Deputy CoS. Gen Harel, who led Israel's 2005 withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, is the first artillery officer to attain the position: a fact that has attracted criticism.
