The US Army and US Air Force (USAF) have formally teamed up to invest USD2.7 billion over the next six years to build up separate fleets of a fixed-wing, multipurpose aircraft. The competitive phase for the Joint Cargo Aircraft (JCA) was launched almost immediately after the agreement was signed on 17 March, with the army releasing a request for proposals (RfP) to buy the first 32 transports up to Fiscal Year 2011. The army's plans are to spend USD1.3 billion to acquire an initial capability in 2008. The USAF plans to field its first unit two years later and is budgeting USD1.4 billion over the next five years.
