The US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) has authorised low-rate production of the Spe- cial Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle (SCAR), a multicalibre modular carbine that may point the way for future small-arms acquisitions. Major Ken Hoffman, a SOCOM spokesman, told Jane's the command approved low-rate initial production of SCAR on 6 June, with deliveries scheduled to begin in January 2007. An initial operational test and evaluation period will follow between March and June 2007.
