Private security firms are feeling the impact of new 'anti-mercenary' legislation in South Africa. On 15 August, the South African Parliament's Defence Committee approved the Prohibition of Mercenary Activity Bill, which would tighten oversight of South African citizens and residents working in areas of armed conflict. The proposed law builds on the country's Regulation of Military Assistance Act of 1998, which bans mercenary activity and regulates the provision of military services.
