Iran, by 31 August, ignored an ultimatum presented by the UN Security Council under Resolution 1696, which called for the suspension of its uranium enrichment programme. In the lead-up to the deadline a series of separate, perhaps orchestrated, events from Tehran served to sustain Western concerns that Tehran looks set to continue on a course that could lead to it acquiring a military nuclear capability. These events are occurring in parallel with a missile development programme, elements of which could potentially deliver that capability.
