摘要

Contracting practices in Turkey appear to be becoming more transparent as the taboo against charging military officers for corruption has been broken, paving the way for a reduction of military power in politics. In a step toward meeting EU acceptance criteria, the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) have allowed an ex-navy commander to be tried on corruption charges: the first such trial in decades. A military court opened the first hearing of the allegations of corruption against retired admiral Ilhami Erdil, who served as the commander of the Turkish Navy Forces Command (TNFC) from 1999 to 2001, on 21 December. At the hearing Erdil and his wife and daughter, who are co-defendants, rejected the charges.
