A phased firing programme of the Rheinmetall Waffe Munition (RWM) M109L52 155 mm/ 52-cal self-propelled howitzer (SPH) will be carried out this year, leading to qualification of its breech and barrel. Over 300 projectiles have been fired, via remote control, at the company's firing range in Germany since trials started early in 2004. Preliminary live crew clearance is expected in the fourth quarter of this year. The US-developed 155 mm M109 SPH is the most widely deployed system of its type with most versions fitted with a 155 mm/39-cal barrel, which was optimised for older types of ammunition.
