The Netherlands is to deploy a 250-strong airmobile special forces task group to Afghanistan to hunt for Al-Qaeda-affiliated insurgents as part of the US-led Operation 'Enduring Freedom', the country's government announced on 25 February. The unit is being deployed "very soon". The centre-right cabinet of Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende has chosen not to follow the process of obtaining parliamentary approval, quoting reasons of national security to justify bypassing that procedure, which could take several weeks to complete.
