Lockheed Martin is in discussions with F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) international partners about the establishment of regional repair facilities for the aircraft in Europe and Asia. While the company says these hubs will not be necessary to keep the worldwide fleets of JSFs flying in coming decades, they will probably be built as a result of political considerations and the desire by the partners to have battle-damaged or otherwise non-flightworthy aircraft fixed closer to home as opposed to in the US. "Right now there is no requirement for a regional repair capability but we are exploring the costs and the options," said Luke Gill, Lockheed Martin vice president of JSF Global Sustainment.
