UK Royal Air Force (RAF) AgustaWestland Merlin HC.3 support helicopters have been deployed to Iraq to augment the Joint Helicopter Command (JHC) detachment supporting UK forces operating in the Basra region. Four helicopters of No 1419 Flight, 28 (Army Co-operation - AC) Squadron left their home base at RAF Benson, Oxfordshire on 25 February to self-deploy more than 2,500 miles (4,000 km) to Iraq, via stopovers in Cyprus, Jordan and Kuwait. Before arriving in Iraq, the squadron deployed aircraft for trials in Jordan to assess suitability for desert operations. On 19 March, they reached Full Operational Capability (FOC) as part of the UK's Joint Helicopter Force (Iraq) JHF (I) supporting the UK-led arm of the Multinational Division (South East) MND(SE) as they continue to support the stabilisation and peace process within Iraq.
