Russia's Strategic Missile Forces (SMF) have started the final scrapping of ordnance of the 59th Strategic Missile Division stationed at Kartaly (Chelyabinsk region) and of the 10th Strategic Missile Division stationed at Kostroma. According to Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) plans, the number of strategic missile divisions will be cut from 15 to 10 by 2010, with the number of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) on active duty scheduled to be reduced from 496 to 313. Currently, the SMF have 496 ICBMs, of which 226 are silo-based and 270 on mobile platforms. Of the 226 silo-based ICBMs, 86 are SS-18 'Satan' heavy missile systems in modifications 4, 5 and 6 (R-36MUTTKh or 15A18 and R-36M2 Voyevoda or 15A18M), 100 are SS-19 'Stiletto' (UR-100NUTTKh) medium-weight systems and 40 SS-27 (RS-12M2 Topol-M) lightweight ICBM systems. The mobile land systems include 270 SS-25 'Sickles' (RS-12M Topol).
